Why is the research being conducted?

The goal of this research project is to discover the techniques and stylistic characteristics of Progressive Metal Music. To achieve this, it is important to first determine what is Progressive Metal Music. This survey will be used to find what the majority view on what characterises this (sub) genre, and which artists are widely agreed to be within this (sub) genre.

What you will be asked to do

You will be asked to complete an online survey. The survey contains 4 questions about your opinion on who the most representative artists in this (sub) genre are and which of their albums most epitomises their style as well as questions on what characterises this (sub) genre. Your participation is voluntary, and you will not be asked for any personal details. You are only asked to give as much detail in your answer as you feel comfortable doing.

The expected benefits of the research

As Progressive Metal Music is a fairly contemporary style, there is not a great deal of literature on it, particularly in musical terms. This research will provide a view of what constitutes the style and how to compose and record it.
